Last term, we formalised our Walking to and from School Policy (attached). In summary, it is expected that P1-3 pupils are accompanied by a person over 16. There is however an option for parents of P3 pupils to provide written consent for their child to be accompanied by a P6 or 7 sibling, if the parents deem both pupils to be capable of walking safely without an accompanying adult. Since then, we have had an increasing number of P3 parents requesting that their children are permitted to walk with P4 and 5 pupils. We have strong reservations regarding safety on the way home as we are aware of incidents which have occurred in the past, where children have participated in potentially dangerous behaviour, especially around the bridge. On some occasions other pupils who were passing by at the time were put in danger. We do however respect the parent voice and want to have a policy which protects children and is agreeable to the majority of those involved. We are therefore reviewing the policy and would appreciate your feedback.
